The Ebay Challenge

My journey to list 300 auctions on eBay in 2025

I happened to move to a different state during COVID and I recently found out about a bunch of Thrift Stores that are owned by an origination that helps addictions and families in distress. They are a true thrift store that offers items for twenty-five cents and up. I mean I have seen couches (in great shape) for only $10.

After years of trying different wholesalers and retail arbitrage, with no real luck, I thought that this may actually allow me to buy some cool items for cheap prices. Plus sell the items for a great price.

The biggest problem is what to sell?

I’m not a fan of being an “Everything Seller”. I have a small brick and mortar business, and fifty to seventy-five percent of my sales come from repeat customers. When you don’t have a following it is almost impossible to form repeat customer relationships.

However, since I have no idea which used products are going to sell the best, I will be listing random items to see which items sell quickly and for the highest profit. I will also be selling items around the house and some items from my business.

Why 300 auctions?

I think it will be easier to focus on listing items than how much money I will make per item. When I think about how much profit I will make from an item, it can be quite discouraging, After the cost of a item, listing fees, final value fees, and shipping supplies, the net profit on a ten-dollar item may only be a couple of dollars.

What a slow process!

I started this challenge on April 1st. By May 1st I have listed fifty-one auctions on eBay and one on Mercari. I have sold seven auctions with a total net profit of $110.00.

I still have two-hundred and fifty more to go, and I have been hitting the thrift stores (and even Burlington”), super hard. Not to mention, I noticed that the more consistent I list, the more views and sales I receive.

I took one week off because my niece stayed with me for spring break, we went Kayaking for Easter Sunday, Gem Mining on Monday, processed Funkos and Pokemon on Tuesday, thrift shopped on Wednesday, processed the thrift haul on Thursday, got everything ready for my pop-up shop Friday, set up and sold on Saturday, drove six hours to be with my grandson for his third birthday on Sunday, and drove back home on Monday…….

And, I did not sell one thing on Ebay, not even any views.

So the key is to list every week.

I few months back, I tried listing one to two auctions per day and my results were pretty bad. Unless, it was a very rare popular item, my sales were very far between, like about one per month. When I started listing ten to fifteen auctions on the same day once per week, I started selling about two auctions per week. I plan on keeping the one day per week schedule, but since I lost a week, I plan on listing two to three days the upcoming week. I also plan on adding a few more items on Mercari.

Until next time.
